How Vanguard Cancer Foundation began...

Vanguard Cancer Foundation arose from the realization that new avenues needed to be pursued to advance cancer research and therapy. Vanguard was founded by Starlight Foundation fundraiser Loretta Phillips Stamos under painful yet propitious circumstances.

In 1994, Jake D. Phillips, Loretta's brother, consulted with Dr. Nagourney, now medical director at the Malcolm C. Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California, regarding treatment for his lung cancer, a cancer deemed "untreatable" by Jake's HMO oncologist. As Dr. Nagourney applied his laboratory-based approach to Jake's cancer, with its personalized treatment selection, Loretta came to appreciate, firsthand, the importance of this innovative form of cancer treatment. She also witnessed Dr. Nagourney's intense dedication and the personal attention that he paid to his patients.

"He made Jake smile, made him comfortable and did all that was possible to save his life."

Loretta realized the innovative care provided for Jake would not be available to cancer patients without personal financial resources. Dr. Nagourney had long considered the merits of a nonprofit organization and saw the need to provide funds to cancer patients who might not otherwise be able to afford innovative treatments. He was also painfully aware of the need to advance cancer research through new mechanisms of financial support.

Loretta's arrival was the needed catalyst that brought Vanguard Cancer Foundation to life. Born out of the dream of one dedicated physician and the love of a sister for her brother, Vanguard Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit entity with a mission to help conquer cancer and provide hope.
